A County With 37 Data Centers Just Asked Its Schools to Use Less Electricity
Everyone knows by now that smarter AI means a bigger electricity bill. What we rarely picture is that bill landing on the air conditioner in our kid’s classroom. In one Virginia county, that is exactly what happened. A community packed with data centers turned around and asked its own schools to ease up on the power — a quietly ironic scene, and probably a preview of more to come.
What Happened in a County Stacked With Data Centers
The setting is Henrico County, Virginia, part of the densest data center corridor in the United States. Virginia is often called the data center capital of the world, and for good reason: a large share of global internet traffic physically passes through Northern Virginia’s server farms.
The problem is the strain these facilities put on the grid. When a heat wave hits, residential air conditioning demand spikes — and that spike stacks on top of data center loads that never pause, day or night. So the county asked its public facilities, schools especially, to help by cutting back.
The logic is blunt. The grid can only carry so much. When data centers lock up a big chunk of that capacity in advance, the residents and public institutions splitting the rest are the ones who get asked to tighten their belts first.
When “AI Is an Energy Hog” Stops Being a Statistic
For a while now, the warnings about AI’s power draw have stayed comfortably abstract. A single data center uses as much electricity as a small city. One chatbot query burns several times the energy of a web search. Tidy numbers, easy to nod at and forget.
This case swaps the statistic for a scene. The moment the cooling at your child’s school becomes the thing being rationed, AI’s energy footprint stops being somebody else’s problem.
What surfaces here is a prioritization problem. Data centers are typically bound by long-term contracts and enormous capital commitments, which makes them hard to throttle on demand. Schools and public agencies, on the other hand, respond to a simple “please help, it’s for the public good.” So the easiest load to cut gets cut first — not the largest one, the most cooperative one.
Why Not Just Build More Power Plants
The obvious rebuttal writes itself: so build more electricity.
Fair, but reality moves slowly. New power plants and transmission lines take years to permit and build. A data center, given enough capital, can go up in one or two. Demand is climbing like a rocket on the back of the AI boom while the supply infrastructure crawls like a tortoise.
That speed mismatch is the heart of the conflict. When grid expansion and generation capacity can’t keep pace with new data centers, the cost of the gap falls squarely on existing users. Sometimes it shows up as higher electricity bills. Sometimes, as in Henrico, it shows up as a request to conserve.
This Isn’t Only an American Story
Is this a uniquely American scene? Hardly. South Korea is in the middle of its own race to attract AI data centers, and the country’s long-running headaches — power demand concentrated around Seoul, chronic transmission shortfalls — make the parallel uncomfortably close.
Data centers are attractive: they bring jobs and investment, which is why local governments compete fiercely to land them. But Henrico shows the other side of the ledger. The facility is welcomed, and then the electricity bill it generates gets divided across the whole region.
Balancing a data center’s tax revenue against residents’ power burden is a problem every region courting these facilities will eventually have to solve.
The Takeaway: Who Pays the Bill for Convenience
One honest caveat: this topic is so new that it has barely registered in the usual community conversations over the past month. That silence is the point. It is an issue just breaking the surface — the kind where what happens next matters far more than what has happened so far.
The convenience AI offers always comes with an electricity bill attached. The real question is who splits that bill, and how. The Big Tech firm running the data center?
